What is an Inverter Generator Used For?

What is an Inverter Generator?

They are generators that will safely power equipment, smart devices and sensitive electronics gadgets. They produce stable and clean energy as opposed to traditional generators.

An inverter generator will electronically throttle the engine up and down to meet its demand instead of running at full power all the time. This results in improving efficiency, which means that you won't have to fill up the petrol or LPG ( Liquefied Petroleum Gas) as frequently as you would normally.

An inverter generator will also produce clean power, lower emissions and are usually very quiet. Inverter generators are used to power everything from offices to campsites, home appliances to mobile coffee vans during blackouts/power outage.

How Does an Inverter Generator Work?

Traditional generators use a heavy alternator whereby inverter generators use a much lighter weight digital electronic alternator, this is called the inverter. The invertor generator produces DC power (direct current), next, the inverter generator "inverts" and converts this to a clean, steady flow of AC (Alternating current) power which lets it provide a very stable sine wave. This process means you will get the increased run time and power as pure as the power you get from mains power outlets in your own home.

Even when on the road, you can trust the generator power output to run your favourite equipment. Inverter generator technology has allowed manufacturers to design compact, ultra-lightweight generators that are ideal for camping, caravanning, and 4X4 touring.

Inverter generators have greater efficiency and can be up to half the size of traditional generators. Inverter generators are fuel-efficient compared to conventional models. The engine speed will automatically adjust in direct proportion to its load; this means it will maximize fuel consumption efficiency while maintaining a 240V supply. It also means you will benefit from a much longer continuous running time and constant speed.

Another benefit is that you won't need to refuel your inverter generator as often as a traditional generator. Portable inverter generators are also a very quiet operation when running compared to their traditional counterparts, so no loud vibrating units.

What Is the Difference Between an Inverter Generator and a Conventional Generator?

Well, we know they are both generators, and that both of them are portable, however, the way they generate electricity is what makes an inverter generator more fuel-efficient and quieter than other portable generators. See below a brief overview of the main differences between inverter generators and conventional portable generators.

The main technical difference between conventional generators and inverter generators is what kind of electricity they produce. Inverter generators produce electricity in three phases of alternating current ranging from AC to DC high frequency back to a stable AC current, while conventional generators only produce AC electricity.

Conventional portable generators can produce more power than an inverter generator. Inverter generators are more energy-efficient due to how they create the final AC power current. The inverter generator engine will automatically adjust to the load, which is not possible for a conventional portable generator to do.

Inverter generators are usually more portable than a conventional fuel-powered generator; this difference has to do with the amount of power they each produce.

The conventional portable generator is known for the noise level that it will generate. The noise is due to the mechanics, so even though many efforts have been made to minimize the noise they produce, a conventional fuel-powered generator is not quiet.

To make up for a lower output of power in inverter generators, many manufacturers install a parallel connection. It means that two separate inverter generators of the same model can then be connected, the inverter generator can the deliver double the amount of power required.

Inverter technology generators will already produce fewer greenhouse emissions than a conventional power-fueled generator. It is much easier to find an inverter generator that meets the required environmental standards of clean electricity than it is to find a traditional portable generator that will.

Inverter generators are more expensive to buy than conventional portable generators. You will find that if cleaner power is required, a conventional generator is a more affordable option. Inverter generators work on newer technology and have the added benefits of greater fuel efficiency and are much quieter to run, and this is why they are more expensive to purchase.

Drawbacks of Common Portable Generators

A portable generator will need to be placed within extension-cord range of your property. Its engine will continuously run like the engine of a car.  A typical portable generator will also give off heat, noise and nasty exhaust fumes just like a car. If they are not correctly ventilated a portable generator could possibly cause carbon monoxide poisoning or even a fire.

Typical Uses of Inverter Generators

They don't emit noxious gasses, they are quiet to run, compact and ultra-lightweight.  Invert generators are perfect for so many uses and are easily portable. See below for a list of places and events you can use an inverter generator for:

Camping

They are perfect for providing electricity for a camping trip.

Caravans

Inverted generators are perfect for caravans if an electric hook-up is not available.

Outdoor parties

These units are superb when holding outdoor parties for your electrical current requirements.

Fishing

If you are on a fishing trip and need an electrical source, an inverter generator is perfect.

Houseboats

Inverter generators are silent and don't emit noxious fumes, so perfect for a houseboat.

DIY

An inverter generator is ideal for providing portable power when mains electricity is not available.
